Water containers: with a tap, or collapsible

For drinking water, buy a container that says it's food-grade or safe for drinking water. A rigid 20 to 25-litre container with a tap, such as the Sirsa 25-litre at about £21, is easiest to use once it's full. A collapsible one folds away when you don't need it and is handy for collecting from a standpipe or a water company's bottled supply.

Buying through our links costs you nothing extra. Some of them earn us a small commission, and that's what keeps Survival Bunker going: it pays for the time it takes to keep our picks and figures up to date. Thank you for helping. How we choose and how we earn.

Our picks

What to look for

  • Food-grade or "safe for drinking water", said by the maker or the shop. "BPA-free" on its own isn't the same claim.
  • A tap, so you can fill a kettle without lifting and pouring 20 kg.
  • Size against weight. A litre of water weighs a kilo: 25 litres is more than most people want to carry.
  • Rigid or folding. Rigid containers are tougher and easier to pour from; folding ones store flat. Basic folding carriers are cheap, but the better ones can cost more than a rigid can.
